In Match 31 of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in Abu Dhabi, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by nine wickets. With 10 overs to spare, KKR chased down the target, capturing two points on the board after bowling RCB out for 92. With the help of six fours and a six, Gill scored a quickfire 48 off 34 balls, while Iyer's IPL debut saw him smash a 41 off 27 balls unbeaten knock.
It was a perfect opening game by KKR, as they showed no signs of discomfort and did their work in a professional manner. As KKR scored 56 runs at the end of the powerplay, the pair completed a fifty-run partnership in the sixth over. Despite Gill's dismissal in the 10th over, Iyer was able to hit three fours in the same over, helping KKR make the victory comfortable. Kohli won the toss and decided to bat ahead of the second innings - his 200th IPL game. With his second over, Prasidh Krishna took Kohli for a duck, catching the RCB skipper before the wickets. The big wicket for KKR came early in the game.
On the last ball of the powerplay, Lockie Ferguson dismissed Devdutt Padikkal for 31 runs for the second wicket. It was Devdutt Padikkal and KS Bharat's third wicket partnership which was broken. The wicket-taking party was then joined by André Russell, who took two wickets. After having KS Bharat caught in the deep in the ninth over, the West Indian then scalped AB de Villiers. RCB are left on 51/4 following this loss. KKR then ran through RCB's batting order with Varun Chakravarthy picking up three wickets and producing a run-out. Although he missed a hat-trick, mystery spinner Kumar Shamsuddin dismissed Glenn Maxwell, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Sachin Baby in his four overs and returned with figures of 3/13.
A wicket was picked up by each Ferguson and Russell as KKR dismissed RCB for 92.
