Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) played tight with the ball and held their nerve against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday as they won by four runs in Match 52 of the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Virat Kohli started the game with a crisp four through the offside of the off-side as the RCB captain needed 142 runs to win. Kohli's big wicket was taken by SRH in the first over, thanks to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. A Siddarth Kaul dismissal of Dan Christian in the fourth over gave SRH its second RCB wicket in the powerplay.
Umran Malik got his maiden wicket in the IPL as he caught KS Bharat in the seventh over, making it three for the hosts in the chase. Glenn Maxwell came into the middle and announced his presence by smashing a six off the first ball he faced. As RCB moved to 67/3 after 10 overs, the right-handed player took on Rashid Khan, hitting him for fours and sixes. In a crucial fifty-run partnership, Maxwell and Padikkal pushed RCB past 90 as Maxwell carried on with his merry ways.
In order to break the partnership, SRH needed something special, and Williamson provided just that with his direct hit ending Maxwell's 40-run blitz in 25 balls. Rashed bowled Padikkal out for 41 in the 17th over. Even with Shahbaz Ahmed striking a couple of overs, SRH stayed in the hunt, pushing RCB to score 13 runs in the last over. As SRH won with just 8 runs in the final over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, they secured a fine victory. An unchanged Royal Challengers Bangalore chose to bowl against SRH, who maintained the same playing XI. RCB's first breakthrough came in the second over, when George Garton dismissed Abhishek Sharma. Sharma had opened the innings along with Jason Roy.
The side scored a total of 50/1 at the end of the powerplay after Kane Williamson replaced Sharma in the middle. In the ninth over, the pair added a vital 50 runs together. Harshal Patel, the Purple Cap-holder, dismissed Roy-Williamson for 31 in his 12th over and shattered the Roy-Williamson stand. SRH got off to a bad start as Christian dismissed Garg and then caught Roy for 44 with a stunning juggling return catch during his second over. Yuzvendra Chahal also took a wicket in the 16th over when he trapped Abdul Samad in front of the wickets. RCB restricted SRH to 141/7 despite Wriddhiman Saha and Jason Holder scoring 10 and 16 runs respectively.
Here are the Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 141/7 (Jason Roy 44, Kane Williamson 31; Harshal Patel 3/33) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 137/6 (Devdutt Padikkal 41, Glenn Maxwell 40; Umran Malik 1/21) by 4 runs.
