CSK became the first team to enter the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs with its win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 44 of the IPL 2021 in Sharjah on Thursday. CSK completed the chase in 19.4 overs and with 6 wickets remaining to claim their ninth victory of the season, after restricting SRH to 134/9. CSK was set up for a comfortable win with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis at the top continuing their solid display. After 10 overs in the chase, both players put together yet another half-century stand to get CSK started and take the side to 75/0.
In the 11th over, Jason Holder dismissed Gaikwad for 45, giving SRH its first breakthrough of the innings. Du Plessis and Moeen Ali then took CSK past 100 runs together. It wasn't long before SRH struck back through Rashid Khan and Holder, who took three wickets between them to dismiss Moeen, Suresh Raina, and Du Plessis. CSK's Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni, though, ensured the side didn't lose any further wickets and always ensured they would cross the finish line, with Captain Cool collecting two sixes to secure victory. CSK made one change during the previous innings, replacing Sam Curran with Dwayne Bravo, who batted earlier. SRH remained unchanged.
CSK conceded five runs in the first two overs, SRH's Widdhiman Saha hit two sixes in Deepak Chahar's third over. Josh Hazlewood dismissed Jason Roy in the fourth over to give CSK their first wicket with the ball. Dwayne Bravo trapped Kane Williamson before the wickets as SRH finished their powerplay at 41/1, their second wicket lost soon after. Together, Garg and Saha added 23 runs, but they were out inside eight runs. The CSK wicketkeeper caught his 100th IPL catch as the CSK team's wicketkeeper after Bravo beat Garg and Jadeja dismissed Saha for 44. SRH passed the 100-run mark with a 35-run stand between Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad. CSK finally got rid of the two through Hazlewood's double haul in his 17th over. Jason Holder was then bowled in the penultimate over by Shardul Thakur as CSK finished with 134/7.
