Neesham and Nathan Coulter-Nile dominated with the ball, while Ishan Kishan struck 50* in the night session as Mumbai Indians (MI) won this match in the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. MI retained their sixth win this season as they restricted RR to 90/9 and then chased down the target in overs for victory. Coulter-Nile had four wickets while Neesham collected three as MI restricted RR to 90/9. With three maximums to his name in the third over, the MI captain got things going with fours and sixes in his first over. When Rohit got out in the fourth over, RR made their first breakthrough when Chetan Sakariya struck. Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav hit three fours in the fifth over to officially announce Suryakumar Yadav's arrival in the MI team. The final over of MI's powerplay saw MI move past 50 but Suryakumar was out.
It was Ishan who took off with some flair. Four and two sixes by the left-handed batsman in the 8th over were followed by a four and six more to bring up his fifty and help MI to an impressive win in 8.2 overs. The first two wickets of the innings were taken by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Evin Lewis, but Nathan Coulter-Nile struck in the fourth over to bring MI their first breakthrough. Then, Jasprit Bumrah outplayed Lewis in the final over of the powerplay, and Neesham got Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube for two wickets in quick succession. RR was then reduced to 50/5 as Coulter-Nile dismissed Glenn Phillips. RR was then reduced to 50/7 as Michael Bevan dismissed Rahul Tewatia. The upper half of RR's middle order was then beaten by MI, who held them at 90/9.
