In the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match 41 in Sharjah, Sunil Narine started with the bat and bowled with the ball for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Delhi Capitals (DC). Venkatesh Iyer was dismissed by Lalit Yadav in his fifth over as KKR were off to a fast start. DC picked up the second KKR wicket in the powerplay shortly after Rahul Tripathi announced his arrival. KKR's Gill and Morgan got out respectively in the 11th and 12th overs as DC tightened things up with the ball. Avesh Khan picked up his second wicket to make KKR 96/5 after Dinesh Karthik and Nitish Rana added 29 runs to their stand to reduce them to 96/5.

The match changed course after Narine joined Rana in the middle. KKR scored 21 runs in the 16th over, to bring the target down to nine runs from four overs. The left-hander tagged Kagiso Rabada for two sixes and a four in the 16th over. After Narine became out in the following over after scoring 21 runs in 10 balls, and KKR lost Tim Southee in the 18 over, Rana, who made 36 runs in an unbeaten fashion, guided KKR to victory. DC brought in Steve Smith in place of Prithvi Shaw, while KKR changed two players in their team, as Southee and Sandeep Warrier replaced Andre Russell and Prasidh Krishna.

With Shikhar Dhawan and Smith leading the team to 29/0, DC made a strong start. The opening act of their innings was cut short as Lockie Ferguson struck in his first over after a catch was taken by Venkatesh Iyer. In the minutes following the powerplay, Narine broke through the defence of Shreyas Iyer, disrupting the woods. As Smith and Pant added 37 runs to the stand, Ferguson picked up his second wicket, which had was chopped back by Smith onto the stumps. Towards the end of the 15th over, Iyer's twin strikes and Narine's wicket of Lalit Yadav brought DC to 92/6. KKR restricted DC to 127/9 with R Ashwin and Rishabh adding 28 runs together.
