As the VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 came to a close on Monday, Delhi Capitals (DC) held their nerve and beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three wickets. As DC moved to the top of the points table with their 10th win of the season, Shimron Hetmyer played an impressive knock of 28* under pressure. Prithvi Shaw led the chase of 137 with some attractive shots before Deepak Chahar took CSK's first wicket in the third over. Shakhar Dhawan counterattacked with two fours and as many sixes in the fifth over as he chased Chahar. As the powerplay came to an end, CSK struck back with a wicket of Josh Hazlewood. Ravindra Jadeja took his first wicket of the match in the 10th over, as DC skipper Rishabh Pant reached 15 before being out.
After debutant Ripal Patel and Dhawan took DC to 90, Ripal was finally ejected by Jadeja. The CSK bowler then dismissed both R Ashwin and Dhawan to reduce DC to 99/6 with a double-wicket over in the 15th over. DC stayed in the race, however, with a 36-run stand by Shimron Hetmyer and Axar Patel. Despite CSK's effort to keep things tight, Hetmyer was credited with a reprieve after dropping a catch in the 18th over. While DC scored with two balls remaining despite Axar Patel's dismissal in the final over. There were several interesting events in the first over, which saw a close decision on the DRS for Ruturaj Gaikwad, a streaky four, and a solid cover drive, which led to 16 runs.
Although it did not take DC long to claim the first wicket of the game when Axar Patel bowled Du Plessis in the third over. Anrich Nortje ejected Ruturaj Gaikwad two overs later. As Rishabh Pant's team continued chipping away, Axar and R Ashwin, both excellent bowlers, took the game away from CSK to leave them 62/4. CSK needed a partnership to rebuild the innings and the duo of Ambati Rayudu and captain MS Dhoni did just that. The pair took the game deep and helped CSK cross the 100-run mark in the 17th over. In the 18th over, Rayudu bashed Avesh Khan for a four and six to complete a 50-run partnership. Rayudu ripped two fours and sixes off the penultimate over of the innings, bringing up a fine half-century, before CSK posted 136/5.
Here are the Scores: Delhi Capitals 139/7 (Shikhar Dhawan 39, Shimron Hetmyer 28*; Shardul Thakur 2/13) beat Chennai Super Kings 136/5 (Ambati Rayudu 55*, Robin Uthappa 19; Axar Patel 2/18) by 3 wickets.
