History of Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Statehood Day:
Manipur and Tripura, the erstwhile princely states, were joined into the Indian Union in October 1949 and became complete states on January 21, 1972, under the North-Eastern Region (Re-Organisation) Act, 1971. Meghalaya, which was previously part of Assam, was also granted statehood under the same act.
Shortly after the nation obtained independence from British rule, the princely states that had merged into the Indian Union began acquiring statehood.
On the one hand, Meghalaya was still a part of Assam when Tripura and Manipur were accorded the status of Union Territories in 1949.
Later, in 1969, the state obtained autonomous state status by the Assam Reorganisation Act.
With the passage of the North-Eastern Region (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Manipur were granted full statehood on January 21, 1972.
