Could India Experience A Fourth Covid Wave In Light of Recent Outbreaks in China and Hong Kong:
There are concerns that a fourth wave of the Covid-19 could hit India in the near future after the recent outbreaks in China and Hong Kong. China saw its new Covid-19 cases double from the previous day on Tuesday, making it the country facing by far its biggest outbreak since the pandemic's early days. In the latest 24-hour period, the National Health Commission of China reported 3,507 locally spread cases, up from 1,337 a day earlier. China's zero-tolerance strategy, put to the test by a fast-spreading virus known as Stealth Omicron, has previously prevented an outbreak of the virus after a deadly outbreak in early 2020.
Jilin province in northeast China saw most of the new cases, with 2,601 reported. Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen have all experienced smaller outbreaks. After some auto and electronics factories shut down because of Coronavirus outbreaks, Chinese authorities tightened anti-virus controls at ports on Tuesday, raising the risk of trade disruptions.
China is experiencing a spike in Coronavirus infections. Chairman of NTAGI's Covid-19 Working Group of India, Dr NK Arora, warned Indians not to take the disease "for granted" because new variants can occur in any country at any time. "Complacency will not be good at this time just because the Omicron wave has subsided so quickly. We cannot take it for granted that there will be no new variants in the future," Dr Arora said.
When asked whether the COVID-19 outbreak in China could impact India, he said, "We are waiting for further information whether the Chinese outbreak was caused by an already circulating variant or one of its sub-lines, or even a new variant that has made its way into the system."
Furthermore, the health official warned people to keep an eye on Covid-19 at all times. "We have to stay vigilant constantly." Until all countries have reached a point where they can say the pandemic has ended. The time for doing any of those things is yet to come," he added. Various other restrictions have been imposed by China since the initial outbreak of Covid-19 in the city of Wuhan in early 2020, but the fast-spreading variant known as "stealth omicron" has put the country's zero tolerance policy to the test.
