History of World Sustainable Gastronomy Day?

On the 18th of June, the world celebrates World Sustainable Gastronomy Day. By passing resolution A/RES/71/246 in December 2016, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 18 as World Sustainable Gastronomy Day.

In collaboration with member states, UN organizations, and other international and regional bodies, as well as civil society, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) work to make Sustainable Gastronomy Day more accessible.
How does The United Nations System Contributes to a Sustainable Gastronomy?

In collaboration with the Member States, UN organizations, other international and regional bodies, as well as civil society, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO),

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the United Nations General Assembly work to facilitate the commemoration of Sustainable Gastronomy Day in order to raise public awareness of its contribution to sustainable development.
UNESCO's initiatives include the following:
  • In 2004, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network was launched with the goal of sharing best practices and forming collaborations in seven creative disciplines. 26 cities have been designated as Creative Cities of Gastronomy as of 2020.
  • Promoting clean energy for local restaurants (use gas and electricity instead of coal, use natural gas instead of carbon).
  • Raising public awareness of sustainable gastronomy through TV food channels and gastronomy shows, as well as food cultural exhibitions aimed at the food industry and farmers.
According to the FAO, green culture meals are not only nutritious, but also sustainable, and countries that already have dietary recommendations should start thinking about how to include sustainability in them.
