Women's Premier League 2023: Teams, Schedule and Facts
The TATA WPL, or Women's Premier League, is a highly anticipated women's Twenty20 cricket franchise league in India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India operates and owns it. The very first season of the WPL will take place in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai from March 4th to March 26th, 2023, with five franchises participating.
Women will be able to attend matches for free during the first season. The opening ceremony at DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai will feature performances by AP Dhillon, Kriti Sanon, and Kiara Advani.
The Women's T20 Challenge was India's first prominent women's Twenty20 competition. This began as a single-match competition in 2018 and was expanded to a three-team, three-match competition in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly announced plans in February 2022 to create a women's version of the Indian Premier League (IPL), India's significant men's Twenty20 contest, to replace the Women's T20 Challenge. By August, plans had progressed, and in October, the BCCI declared that it was considering a five-team tournament in March 2023. The Women's Indian Premier League was the league's informal name until January 25, 2023, when the BCCI officially renamed it the Women's Premier League.
The BCCI welcomed bids for the league's title advertising deals rights till 2027 January 28, 2023. These were sold to the Tata Group for an undisclosed sum.

The WPL league structure is modeled after that of the IPL. There will initially be five teams. The teams will compete in a double round-robin format, with the three teams with the most points progressing to the tournament's playoff stages. If the league is a success, the Board intends to increase the number of matches and franchises in future seasons.
The league's first season is set to take place from March 4 to March 26, 2023, and will include 22 matches played at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium. A team may have a maximum of five overseas players in each match, one of whom must be from an ICC Associate Nation.
