WIFI vs LIFI

What is Wi-Fi?

wifi

Wi-Fi(Wireless Fedibility) is nothing but a Wireless Networking Protocol which is used by the devices to communicate wirelessly (without any cable connections). Wi-Fi is based on the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. Wi-Fi is used by digital devices to transfer or exchange data using radio waves, it is used by digital devices for internet access. The non-profit Wi-Fi Alliance owns the trademark of Wi-Fi. This trademark restricts the unauthorized use of the term Wi-Fi Certified to products that have successfully completed operational certification testing.

In simple words, we can say that Wi-Fi is internet access to the devices such as smartphones, tablet, and Laptops which are wireless-capable. Using Wi-Fi communication of data can be done wirelessly in a particular location.

How Wi-Fi Works?

To understand how Wi-Fi works we will require a device, it can be a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or router which can receive and transmit the signals wirelessly.

Generally, in an office or at home a small router is used. This router receives the internet connection from the service provider then it transmits that service to the devices which are within the range of that router. This whole thing is done wirelessly. In place of a router, we can use a smartphone, tablet, or laptop to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot so that we can connect and share the internet connection with other devices.

Benefits of the Wi-Fi over Wired Connection -

In today’s world all smartphones, tablets, and laptops already come up with inbuilt Wi-Fi capabilities. So here are some benefits of Wi-Fi –

  • Can be used anywhere: If you want to connect to the internet then Wi-Fi can be used anywhere now, we don’t need to carry the connecting cable all the time. A location which has Wi-Fi facilities are increasing day by day.
  • More Efficient: Wi-Fi can work seamlessly, with no fear of a broken connection.
  • Can use on Multiple Devices: Wi-Fi can be used on multiple devices using one device, all we have to do is just enable Hot-Spot on one of the devices and enable Wi-Fi on others.
  • Mobility: Now we don’t have to stick to a single place for communication purposes. We can go and connect to the internet wherever we want.

The disadvantage of Wi-Fi -

  • Limited Range: A Wi-Fi signal can work up to a certain meter only which is its range. It cannot work beyond that limited range. So, we have to work in that limited range only.
  • Security Issues: Since the Wi-Fi system totally works wirelessly. To transmit the signal, it uses the air so, the signal which is sent through Wi-Fi can be intercepted.
  • Blockage of Signals: A Microwave can disturb the Wi-Fi signals.
What is Li-Fi?

lifi

Li-Fi(Light Fedibility) is also a technology that uses wireless communication unlike Wi-Fi but instead of Radio Waves, it used Light for the transmission of the data. This technology uses VLC (Visible Light Communication) for wireless data transmission. Li-Fi is said to be 100 times faster than Wi-Fi. The first-time word Li-Fi was used by Herald Hass back in 2011 during a TED-Global talk at Edinburgh. Li-Fi is said to be a light communication system that is capable of transmission of data at a very high speed using visible light, ultraviolet, and infrared spectrums. For the transmission of data in visible light only an LED bulb can be used.

How Li-Fi Works?

Li-Fi is a Visible Light Communication system that uses light for the transfer of data at a very high speed. Li-Fi uses LED Bulbs for data transfer, the transfer speed can be increased up to 224 Gigabits/Sec. Using illumination, the data transmission is done in this technology. The bright light-emitting diodes are used in this technology. The data transmission is done by on/off the activity of the bulb in the form of binary codes, human eyes can’t see this so to us bulb appears stable.

Benefits of Li-Fi -

  • Blazing Fast Speed: Li-Fi is 100 times faster than Wi-Fi and can transfer data at the rate of 224 GB per second.
  • More Efficient at Less Cost: Li-Fi is cheaper and more efficient compared to Wi-Fi as it uses only LED Bulbs.
  • More Secure: Li-Fi is more secure it can’t be intercepted easily.

The disadvantage of Li-Fi -

  • Range:  As light can’t pass through a wall or an opaque object which is good from a security point of view but it provides a very limited range.
  • Less Combability:  Since this technology is new so not many devices are compatible with this.
