A Brief Introduction About Jammu and Kashmir:

• Jammu and Kashmir are named after the Jammu region and Kashmir Valley, two regions that are part of it.
• The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, was enacted by both houses of India's Parliament in August 2019. It included provisions for the formation of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. With effect from October 31, 2019, the act reconstituted the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
• A number of valleys can be found in Jammu and Kashmir, such as the Kashmir Valley, the Tawi Valley, the Chenab Valley, the Poonch Valley, the Sind Valley, and the Lidder Valley.
• Kashmir Valley is separated from the Tibetan plateau by the Himalayas while it is divided from the Punjab Plain of the Indo-Gangetic Plain by the Pir Panjal range, which encloses it from the west and the south.
• Through the valley of Kashmir flows the Jhelum River, a major Himalayan River.
• Jammu's southern region is mainly mountainous, with the Shivalik Mountains, the middle Himalayas, and the great Himalayas running parallel between one another in a southeast-northwest direction.
• Fertile plains extend along a narrow strip in the southwest. Jammu is home to rivers such as Chenab, Tawi, and Ravi.

• The Jammu and Kashmir Emblem is an official symbol of the administration of Jammu and Kashmir, a union territory administered by India.
• The new union territory of Jammu and Kashmir has not yet established a distinct emblem for official use, instead of using the phrase "Government of Jammu and Kashmir" on official papers, either alone or in conjunction with India's National Emblem.

State Animal of Jammu and Kashmir: Kashmir Stag (Cervus Elaphus Hanglu)

• The Kashmir stag (Cervus hanglu hanglu), commonly known as hangul, is a Central Asian red deer subspecies found only in Kashmir and its adjacent territories.
• Kashmir stag can be found in dense riverine forests in Jammu and Kashmir's high valleys and mountains, as well as northern Himachal Pradesh.
• Kashmir stag is found mostly in the Dachigam National Park in Kashmir, where it is protected, and elsewhere it is more vulnerable.
• This deer has a bright rump patch that does not include the tail.
• It has a brown coat with speckling on the hair.
• The buttocks inside sides are greyish white, with a line on the inner sides of the thighs and black on the upper side of the tail. Each antler is made up of five tines.
• The beam is heavily bent inward, and the brow and bez tines are frequently close together and above the burr.

State Bird of Jammu and Kashmir: Kalij Pheasant (Lophura Leucomelanos)

• In forests, thickets, and foothills of the Himalayas, a pheasant called the Kalij Pheasant (Lophura Leucomelanos) is found.
• Kalij Pheasant was proclaimed the bird of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir by the Jammu and Kashmir Government on 21 October 2021.
• The males have varying plumages depending on the subspecies involved, but all have bluish-black or at least partially glossy feathers, while the females are generally brown. Red faces and grey legs are seen in both sexes.

State Flower of Jammu and Kashmir: Common Rhododendron (Rhododendron Ponticum)

• Rhododendron ponticum is sometimes known as common or pontic rhododendron.
• The violet-purple flowers are 3.5 to 5 cm in diameter and have little greenish-yellow dots or streaks.

State Tree of Jammu and Kashmir: Chinar (Platanus Orientalis)

• Platanus orientalis, often known as the Old-World sycamore or Oriental plane, is a big, deciduous tree in the Platanaceae family that can grow to heights of 30 meters or more and is notable for its longevity and spreading crown.
• Chinar’s (Platanus orientalis ) lush green foliage transforms to blood crimson, amber, and yellow in the autumn.

State Fish of Jammu and Kashmir: Golden Mahseer (Tor Putitora)

• Tor putitora, also known as the Putitor mahseer, Himalayan mahseer, or golden mahseer, is a critically endangered cyprinid fish found in Himalayan rivers, streams, and lakes.
• Its native range includes the basins of the rivers Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra. It is a popular gamefish that may grow up to 2.75 m in length and 54 kg in weight, however, most captured today are much smaller.
• It is threatened by habitat loss, degradation, and overfishing, and it has already been reduced by more than half. This omnivorous species is typically found on the surface of the water with temperatures ranging from 13 to 30 degrees Celsius.
• It has a reddish-golden color to its caudal, pelvic, and anal fins. While the body above the lateral line is usually golden in color in adults, it may be missing in juvenile specimens.
