State Emblem and Symbols of Puducherry

A Brief Introduction About Puducherry:

  • In the southernmost region of the Indian Peninsula is the Union Territory of Puducherry.
  • Yanam district and Mahé district are respectively bordered by the states of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, while Puducherry district and Karaikal district are bounded by the state of Tamil Nadu.
  • There are four disconnected, minor districts that make up the Indian union territory of Puducherry, often known as Pondichéry.
  • Apart from Chandannagar, it was created from four former French Indian territories: Pondichéry (now Puducherry), Karikal (Karaikal), Mahé, and Yanaon (Yanam) (Chandernagore). Its name comes from Puducherry, the largest district.

State Animal of Puducherry: Indian palm squirrel (Funambulus palmarum)

  • The Indian palm squirrel (Funambulus palmarum), sometimes known as the three-striped palm squirrel, is a naturally occurring rodent species in Sri Lanka and India that belongs to the Sciuridae family.
  • The palm squirrel has a bushy tail that is only a little bit shorter than its body.
  • Three glaring white stripes that extend from head to tail are prominently displayed on the weathered, grey-brown tone of the back.
  • Only from the forelegs to the hind legs do the two outside stripes run. It has a creamy-white belly and a tail with long, black and white hair scattered throughout.
  • The ears are tiny and triangular in shape. Squirrels are much lighter while they are young, and their color develops darker as they get older.
  • Albinism is uncommon but does occur in this species.
State Bird of Puducherry: Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus)

  • Asia, Australia, and the Pacific are home to the genus of cuckoos known as Eudynamys, which includes the real koels. With loud, recog8nisable sounds, they are huge, sexually dimorphic cuckoos that eat both fruits and insects.
  • They infest the nests of other species because they are brood parasites and lay their eggs there.
State Flower of Puducherry: Cannonball (Couroupita guianensis)

  • A deciduous tree in the flowering plant family Lecythidaceae known as Couroupita guianensis goes by many popular names, including cannonball tree.
  • Racemes up to 80 cm long bear the blooms. Some trees produce so many flowers that the racemes cover the trunk completely.
  • One tree may support up to 1000 flowers every day. The blossoms have a powerful aroma that is most potent at night and in the morning. They can be up to 6 cm in diameter, with six petals, and are frequently vividly colored.
  • The petals range from pink and red hues towards the bases to yellowish hues toward the ends. There are two clusters of stamens: a central ring and a cluster of stamens adapted into a hood.

  • Aegle marmelos sometimes referred to as bael, the Bengal quince, the golden apple, the Japanese bitter orange, the stone apple, or the wood apple, is a rare species of tree that is indigenous to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
  • Aegle marmelos is small to a medium-sized deciduous tree that may grow up to 13 meters tall and has slender, drooping limbs, and an open, uneven crown.
