The Brahmotsavam celebration is a significant colourful and 9 days long Hindu festival observed in honour of Lord Venkateswara, a form of the Lord Vishnu also known as Lord Balaji or Lord Srinivasa. The Sanskrit term "Brahmotsavam" is a combination of the terms "Brahma" (the creator) and "Utsavam" (festival), and it basically means "The Festival Celebrated by Lord Brahma."

In addition to being the wealthiest temple in the world, the Tirumala Venkateswara temple receives the greatest number of pilgrims. This temple, which was built in the eighth century, receives 50,000–100,000 pilgrimages every day specially during the festive season.

Lakhs of worshippers attend the temple over the course of a week during the Brahmostavam Festival in September or October. The nine-day Brahmotsavam celebration, also known as Lord Brahma's festival or Brahma's Utsavam.

When Adhik Maas falls in a year, Brahmotsavam is celebrated twice that year. Because of the Adhik Mass in 2023, Brahmotsavam will be celebrated twice. The Brahmotsavam festival was celebrated in September 18th to 26th in 2023, and now it will be celebrated in October 15th to 24th in 2023.

1. Brahma's Invocation: The first Brahmotsavam was celebrated to Lord Venkateswara (a manifestation of Lord Vishnu) on the hills of Tirumala by Lord Brahma, the universe's creator, according to one of the main legends explaining the Brahmotsavam festival. It is said that Lord Brahma put together this extravagant festival to beg Lord Vishnu's forgiveness for his arrogance.

2. Indra's Atonement: The tale of Lord Indra, the king of the gods, is another mythology connected to the Brahmotsavam celebration. According to legend, Indra once provoked the anger of the sage Durvasa, which caused him to lose his influence and status. Indra conducted the Brahmotsavam in the Tirumala temple to atone for his wrongdoing, and he was given back his status.

3. Lord Venkateswara's Wedding: The holy union of Lord Venkateswara (Balaji) and Goddess Padmavathi (Padmavati) is also connected to the Brahmotsavam celebration. There are a number of ceremonies and processions during the celebration that represent their wedding.

4. Demon Slaying: According to certain legends, Lord Venkateswara slew the demon Vakulakshmi, and in celebration of this triumph, the Brahmotsavam festival is held every year.

A Brief Introduction of Events During Navarathri Brahmotsavam 2023:

The Hindu calendar's Navarathri Brahmotsavam festival, which coincides with Navarathri, is observed over nine days in the month of Asvina. The Ankurarpana ceremony—which involves sowing seeds to represent fertility and abundance—takes place the night before starting the Navarathri Brahmotsavam.

Next day the Dwajarohanam ceremony takes place. In this ceremony the Garuda flag is raised which marks the festival's opening of Brahmotsavam Festival. During this festival, in addition to the daily homas, vahanams, and religious events are also organised around the temple.

On the last day of Brahmotsavam, Lord Venkateswara's birth star is worshipped. In the temple tank, the Sudarshana Chakra is bathed. After the Chakra Snanam rites, the Chakra is raised/placed to a higher platform so that the followers might tend to its drippy water and obtain the Lord's blessings. The Brahmotsavam celebration ends with the lowering of the Garuda flag, this process is known as Dhvajavarohanam.

How to Reach Tirumala to Attend Navarathri Brahmotsavam 2023 Festival?

There are several ways to reach the sacred temple of Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy in Tirumala hills. Getting to Tirumala is easy by road or by foot from Tirupati.

 On Foot: To complete a pledge, a lot of devotees climb up the hills to Tirumala on foot. Tirumala is accessible through two well-maintained walkways. These foot routes are known as sopanamargas.

Starting at Alipiri at the base of the hills, the oldest of the two sopanamargas begins. The most popular route is an 11-kilometer trail. The second sopanamarga (Srivari mettu), which begins at Chandragiri, is barely 6 kilometres long.

Note: TTD offers and maintains restrooms, security, a canteen, drinking water, medical assistance, and piped religious music along the walkways. For those worshippers choosing to walk up the hills to Tirumala, TTD also offers a free luggage transfer service.

 By Road:  Tirumala is well connected to Tirupati with buses departing every two minutes. Several direct buses operate from Chennai, Bengaluru, and Vellore. A number of taxi operators and private bus operators operate in nearby cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, and Bangalore.

The TTD operates an automobile clinic on the ghat roads to assist with vehicle breakdowns. For help, pilgrims can contact on 0877-2263636 or report at the GNC or Alipiri Toll Gates at Tirumala. A mobile van with a mechanic and spare parts is dispatched by the TTD's transport department in order to provide immediate assistance.

Note: All forms of transportation are prohibited on the ghat route between Tirupati and Tirumala between 12 AM and 3 AM.

 By Rail: There is no native train station in Tirumala. The nearest railway station to Tirumala is situated at around 26 Km away in Tirupati. Major Indian cities are easily accessible from here.

 By Air: Renigunta Airport also known as Tirupati International Airport is the nearest airport to Tirumala which is about 45 km from Tirumala. This airport offers direct flights to Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Visakhapatnam.
