Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, International Hockey Federation president Tayyab Ikram, and Hockey India chairman Dilip Tirkey were among those in attendance at the spectacular event to welcome members of all 16 competing teams.
Brief History About Men’s Hockey World Cup:
Pakistan's Air Marshal Nur Khan originally proposed the Hockey World Cup. Through Patrick Rowley, the founding editor of World Hockey magazine, he pitched his proposal to the FIH. Their concept was approved on October 26, 1969, and was ratified by the FIH Council on April 12, 1970, at a meeting in Brussels.
The FIH has placed no restrictions or limits on the magnitude of the tournament. The 1971 World Cup included only ten nations, making it the smallest World Cup ever. The 1978 Cup featured fourteen different countries. The Cups in 2002 and 2018 featured sixteen nations. The remaining ten World Cups have included 12 countries.
Every two years, the first three tournaments took place. The only competition contested three years after the previous one was the 1978 Cup. It began in the middle of the Summer Olympics hockey competition and has since continued in that manner. To put it another way, the tournament has been staged every four years since then.
