A Glance at Lord Mahavir’s Life:

According to Jainism, Lord Mahavir was the 24th and last Jain Tirthankara. A Tirthankara is an awakened soul born as a human who achieves greatness through intense spiritual practice. Bhagwan was born Vardhamana Mahavir and was later known as Bhagavan Mahaveer. Lord Mahaveera was born as Prince Vardhamana to the Ikshvaku Dynasty to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala.

According to the Vira Nirvana Samvat calendar, Mahavir was born on the thirteenth day of the rising moon in the month of Chaitra in 599 B.C. Queen Trishala had the 14 dreams featured in Jain scriptures while she was pregnant with Vardhamana, suggesting that her unborn baby was destined to accomplish great things. His parents were Jain ascetics who followed Parshvanath. He agreed to marry Princess Yashoda at a young age, as per his parents' wishes, and the couple had a daughter, Priyadarshana.

After the death of the Vardhaman's parents, his older brother Nandivardhana was declared king. Vardhamana desired to be free of worldly ties and for this, he sought approval from his brother to forsake his privileged life. Vardhamana's brother tried to persuade him, but he was obstinate and started fasting and meditating at home. On the tenth day of Margsirsa, at the age of 30, he left his home and decided to embrace the ascetic life of a monk. He gave away his belongings, put on a single piece of cloth, and said Namo Siddhanam, leaving behind all his materialistic attachments.

Mahavir invested the next twelve and a half years practicing a life of intense penance in order to free himself from his fundamental attachments. To overcome his primal desires, he practiced absolute silence and rigorous meditation. Mahavir attained Kevala Jnana, or omniscience, on the tenth day of the rising moon during the month of Vaisakh, 557 B.C., while sitting under a Sal tree on the banks of the river Rijuvaluka. Eventually, he had ideal perception, perfect understanding, perfect conduct, limitless energy, and unhindered bliss.

Mahavir devoted his life to disseminating his Keval Jnana to the public, giving discourses in local languages rather than elite Sanskrit. His very last speech lasted 48 hours and took place in Pavapuri. He achieved moksha shortly after his final discourse, finally free of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth at the age of 72 in 527 B.C.

Mahaveer Jayanti 2023
Lord Mahavir, or Mahaveer Bhagwan, was a great spiritual tutor. Jain worships Mahavir Bhagwan as a godly being that has lived a compassionate, nonviolent, and spiritually awakening life. His lessons keep motivating people all over the world, and Lord Mahavir's life has many life lessons for us to learn.

Lord Mahavir's 5 Major Principles: Lord Mahavir gave 5 main principles for man's betterment, which are also recognized as Panchsheel Siddhanta. Satya, Ahimsa, Asteya, Aparigraha, and Brahmacharya are the five principles. The first responsibility of man is to be truthful and nonviolent. The second one is asteya which means attaining spiritual peace and salvation, not stealing. Aparigraha, or the absence of attachment to the subject or object, allows a person to give up materialistic interest and continue on the path of spirituality, and a person who practices celibacy (Brahmacharya) easily gains authority over his senses.

1. Have Compassion for all Living Beings: The first life lesson we can learn from Lord Mahavir's life is that we should have compassion for all living beings. As per Mahavir Bhagwan, all living beings have souls and are connected. He tried to teach that all living beings must be treated with compassion and empathy and that there should be no harm done to any living being. Mahavir Bhagwan's lessons on kindness and non-violence are indeed relevant today, and many people have become vegetarians or vegans as a result of them.

2. Non-Violence: Second life lesson we can learn from Lord Mahavir’s Life is Non-Violence. Mahavir Bhagwan was an avid supporter of non-violence. He advised that violence only breeds more violence. Mahavir Bhagwan's non-violence principles had a significant impact on Indian society and inspired many great leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Non-violence is a potent social reform tool. Mahavir Bhagwan's nonviolent teachings can be used in various areas of life, such as politics, economics, and personal relationships. Humans can establish a more serene and harmonious society by selecting nonviolence over violence.

3. Detachment: Third life lesson to learn from Lord Mahavir is Detachment. Mahavir Bhagwan was a firm believer in the concept of detachment, which entails letting go of attachment to materialistic things, desires, and emotions. He taught that releasing these attachments leads to inner peace and spiritual enlightenment. Detachment is a key concept in Jainism, and it is regarded as a prerequisite for attaining enlightenment.

People are constantly flooded with messages in the modern environment telling us that we require more materialistic things to be happy. The teachings of Mahavir Bhagwan on detachment remind us that real happiness originally came from the inside, and it's important for us to not become attached to materialistic things or situational variables.

4. Self-Control: The fourth life lesson to learn from Lord Mahavir is Self-Control. Mahavir Bhagwan valued self-control. He taught that by learning to control one's needs and wants and emotions, one can accomplish inner peace and spiritual enlightenment. Self-control is a key component of Jainism, and it is viewed as a means of overcoming the ego and achieving enlightenment.

We are often encouraged in today's world to give in to our desires and emotions. The teachings of Mahavir Bhagwan on self-control, on the other hand, act as a reminder that real inner peace comes from attempting to control our desires and emotions rather than allowing them to control us.

5. Respect for All Religions: The Fifth life lesson to learn from Lord Mahavir is respect for all religions. All religions were respected by Mahavir Bhagwan, who regarded that all faiths had the ability to lead to spiritual enlightenment. He taught that one should respect and learn from other religions rather than criticize or dismiss them. In the modern environment, where religious intolerance and dispute are all too frequent, this is a crucial lesson to learn.

The teachings of Mahavir Bhagwan on respect for all religions can assist us in building bridges of understanding and promoting peace and harmony among various religious communities.

6. Humility: The sixth life lesson we can learn from Bhagwan Mahavir’s life is humility. Mahaveer was well-known for his humility and straightforwardness. He led a life of great austerity and renunciation, believing that real happiness could only be found by releasing our attachments to materialistic things and earthly pleasures.

Lord Mahaveer's lessons on humility are much more valuable than ever in the modern environment, in which many individuals are preoccupied with prestige and material possessions. We can achieve a more profound sense of inner peace and contentment by learning to let go of our ego and nurture a humble spirit.

7. Forgiveness: The seventh lesson we can learn from Lord Mahavir’s life is forgiveness. Lord Mahaveer's forgiveness teachings are also extremely valuable. He believed that forgiveness was required for one's own growth and to attain enlightenment. He taught us to let go of our rage and resentment toward others and to forgive people who have treated unfairly us.

In the modern environment, where dispute and separation are all too frequent, Mahaveer's lessons on forgiveness can help us heal and move forward. We can nurture a greater sense of inner peace and happiness by learning to let go of grudges and forgive those who have wronged us.
