The International Day of Happiness was first proposed by Jayme Illien at the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2011. As part of the UN General Assembly's responsibility, he wanted happiness economics to be promoted around the world by improving the development of all countries' economies
. The UN General Assembly adopted this policy idea. Happiness Toward a Holistic Approach to Growth was approved by the United Nations General Assembly on 19 July 2011. This initiative was started by Bhutan's then-Prime Minister Jigme Thinley, a country that pursues the goal of "Gross National Happiness" since the 1970s.
