The Bhangarh Fort was built by Bhagwat Singh in 1573 AD for his son Madho Singh. Madho Singh was succeeded by his son Chatr Singh. It is located on the border of the Sariska Reserve in the Aravali range of hills in Alwar district of Rajasthan. The Lahori Gate, the Ajmeri Gate, the Phulbari Gate, and the Delhi Gate are the four points of entry to the fort. There are many Hindu temples at the doorway like Hanuman Temple, Gopinath Temple, Someshwar Temple, Keshav Rai Temple, Mangla Devi Temple, Ganesh Temple, and Navin Temple. The Ajabgarh Fort can be found between Sariska Reserve and Bhangarh Fort. Ajabgarh was built by the son of Chatr Singh, Ajab Singh. The fort is located 235 kms. from Delhi and approaches the entrance gate of the fort in the last 2 km. The stretch of the road is unpaved. The fort is 20 miles from Thana Ghazi. The nearest airport is Jaipur International Airport, which is 88.2 km. from the fort. Bhangarh Fort is ranked the most haunted fort in India. Purohitji Ki Haveli ,the residence of the priest is located in the boundaries of the temple . It is followed by Nachan Ki Haveli (dancer's palace) and Johari Bazar (market place), followed by the Gopinath Temple.
There are some stories because of which Bhangarh Fort is known as the most haunted fort of India. The first one is of a Tantrik and the Princess. There was a beautiful Princess Ratnawati, the daughter of Chatr Singh and younger sister of Ajab Singh. She was known for her beauty. She got many marriage proposals . There was a Tantrik who was adept in black magic and fell in love with the beauty of Princess Ranawati. But he was well known for the fact that she will never accept his proposal. So, he tried to cast a spell on her. Seeing the princess’ maid buying perfume for her in the village, he cast a spell on it so that Ratnawati would fall in love with him. But fortunately Ratanavati came to know this and threw the bottle. It changed into rock and hit the Tantric but before he died ,he cursed the princess, her family, and the entire village . The subsequrnt year, a battle was fought between the forces of Bhangarh and Ajabgarh, which led to the death of Ratnavati and most of the military.
There is one more story . The story of Sadhu and the shadow. Actually , there was a sadhu Guru Balu Nath, who lived on top of the hill on which the Bhangarh Fort was built. He allowed Raja Bhagwat Singh on one condition and the condition was that the building should never cast a shadow on his dwelling. But Ajab Singh, broke the promise by adding columns to the fort that cast a shadow on the ascetic’s house. The angry sadhu cursed to the fort and villages. The hut is known as the “Tantrik ki Chatri.”

And the third story is that after Chatr Singh’s death, since Ajab Singh had already established Ajabgarh, the population of the area had decreased. In 1783, a famine occurred and forced the remaining villagers to seek new avenues.
There are many different stories according to the different people and because of the common belief that the place is haunted so the entry is restricted after sunset inside the fort.
