When is Indian Handloom Day or National Handloom Day is Celebrated?

National Handloom Day or Indian Handloom Day is celebrated on August 7 of every year. It was first celebrated on August 7th, 2015. On 7th August 2021, India is going to celebrate the 7th National Handloom Day. National Handloom Day is being observed at 28 Weavers’ Service Centers in different States and 16 National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Campuses.

Why National Handloom Day or Indian Handloom Day is celebrated?

In India, the handloom industry has grown significantly. India is the home of natural fibres such as Cotton, Silk, and Wool which are used by the handloom weaver to manufacture the handloom products. So, National Handloom Day is celebrated to focus on the Handloom Industry and its importance in India’s Social and Economic Development.

History of National Handloom Day:

First National Handloom Day was inaugurated by the Indian Prime Minister Shree Narendra Modi on the 7th of August 2015 at the Centenary Corridor of the College of Madras in Chennai. After that, every year 7th of August is observed as National Handloom Day. The aim to celebrated this day is to create awareness about the importance of the Indian Handloom Industry. To honour the Swadeshi Movement the date 7th of August was chosen to celebrate National Handloom Day. In 1905, Swadeshi Movement was launched on 7th August. The aim of this movement was to revive the domestic products and production processes.

What is Handloom:

Indian Handloom Day

A Handloom is a loom that is used to weave the material and it is run without electricity. The person who works on the Handloom runs it with his hand. As per the Reservation and Articles for Production Act of 1985 Handloom is any loom other than a power loom. In 2012 a new definition was given that Handloom refers to any loom other than a power loom and any hybrid loom on which at least one weaving process necessitates interaction or energy for production. Maharashtra’s Paithani Weaves, Uttar Pradesh’s Banarasi Saree, Assam’s Muga Mekhla Sadors, Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram Saree all are wonders from the handloom Manufacturers.

Schemes Launched for Handloom By Indian Government:

Indian Government has launched various schemes to encourage the Handloom manufacturers and raise awareness towards the Handloom Industries. For this, A National Handloom Development Programme has been launched. Some other Schemes launched for the Handloom sector are as follows –
